Matapouri Bay.

Some of the finest beaches in New Zealand are to be found on the Northland east coast, Matapouri, Whale Bay, Woolley’s Bay and Sandy Bay.

Matapouri Bay is a spectacular white sandy coastal beach, with restful safe river estuary. This is where the white sands of Northland’s east coast meet the warm clear seas of the Pacific Ocean.

Snorkel or dive Pebbly Bay at the northern end on Matapouri.

Discover the Mermaid Pools at low tide or walk the coastal scenic walkway to Whale Bay, with splendid coastal views (20 minutes one way).

Walking tracks take you to such gems as Whale Bay plus dozens of interesting nooks, crannies and lookout points among magnificent Pohutukawa trees. Whale Bay is an idyllic white sandy bush fringed beach only accessible via a walking track from the car park on the Matapouri Road, 1 km after leaving Matapouri Bay. Walk through groves of ancient Puriri trees and in October, Kowhai heavy with bright yellow flowers to arrive on the Pohutukawa fringed beach.

Matapouri Bay is bounded by public reserves, covered with abundant native bush. This is kiwi habitat.

Matapouri’s tidal river, a safe haven for children of all ages, swim, and catch a fish, ideal for dinghy’s and kayaks.

This tidal river affords a safe anchorage for pleasure craft with access to Matapouri Bay from half tide.

Matapouri offers a public tennis court, public phone box, and well equipped store open seven days a week.
