Matapouri Bay

Matapouri Bay is located in the heart of Northland on the Tutukaka Coast. 

Notable as one of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand, this pristine white sand beach is family friendly with a variety of surf conditions and a nearby estuary. It is popular with swimmers, photographers, body surfers, families and walkers. 

Only 40 minutes drive from Whangarei Central this is the perfect location to access all of the coast

The local store sells takeaways and general household goods so you wont be caught without and can have that classic 'kiwi fish and chips'.​​​

Matapouri Estuary

Just across the road, for those windy days, the estuary is the perfect high tide adventure or lazy paddle location.

 

Kayak or paddle board up the estuary through the mangroves 

 

Kid-friendly mini beaches for those just wanting to dip their toes in 

 

Bridge jumping at High Tide (Please jump with caution and only at high tide when the estuary is deep enough)

Whale Bay Beach and Walkway

Whale Bay is a gorgeous wave free nature scenic reserve accessible only by foot. This white sandy beach and clear water is framed by Pohutukawa trees and can be that little touch of paradise. Explore the rockpools, have a picnic or take a dip in the clear waters. 

Walk from the main Whale Bay carpark (10-15 mins) or from the north end of Matapouri Bay via a farm and bush track (about 45 mins)

Tutukaka Coast

Tutukaka Coast beaches are among the most spectacular in Northland, and New Zealand. Matapouri,
a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay that’s perfect for swimming (even in winter, if you’re wearing a
wetsuit). There are so many beaches to choose from, each with individual character and beauty.

The white sandy beaches include Matapouri Bay, Woolley’s Bay, Whale Bay and Whangaumu Bay. The
inner harbour pebble beaches are Pacific Bay, Kowharewa Bay and Church Bay (accessible via
Tutukaka Block Road). There is also the famous surf beach, Sandy Bay.

Activities

A perfect location to access the water bring your paddle board, kayak, body board or surfboard to take advantage of all the location has to offer! 

With local bush and beach walks, surf nearby at Sandy Bay, nearby diving and plenty of rockpools to explore, there is no shortage of things to do! 

Tutukaka, with its Boat Marina, Concrete Boat launching ramps, Restaurants (Snappa Rock and Marina Pizzeria), Art Gallery, Gift Shop, and Oceans Hotel.

The Tutukaka Coast offers it all!
